Renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma designed the building complete with sleek glass walls and terraced floors. Liz Muller, chief design officer at Starbucks, was responsible for the interiors with a seamless match of Kuma’s modern Japanese style.
As soon as you step into the Roastery you are met with an astounding 16-metre-high coffee-bean cask decorated with handcrafted cherry blossoms, a tribute to the Japanese Sakura trees that line the neighbouring canal.
Inspired by the Japanese paper folding tradition of origami, the bespoke wood-tiled ceiling using SanFoot® Real Wood Veneer in Beech Quarter Cut (7009), brings a sense of tranquillity and peace. The art of origami requires you to be fully present in the moment, slow down, and reflect, all aspects important to our health and well-being. Combining the positive association of this tradition with the use of natural wood material, SanFoot®, embraces the biophilic interior design trend where it has been recognised that natural elements in interior design can generate a multitude of positive emotions.
The ceiling also shows beauty through the lighter décor selection of Beech Quarter Cut (7009). The intricate dance of light and shadow through the various textured planes reflect on the area’s plentiful beauty. Over 53,000 square feet of SanFoot® were installed across all four floors to achieve this masterpiece.
The Japanese influence stems right from the veneer manufacture. The material was locally sourced and treated traditionally to prevent aging and to preserve its natural brightness and colour.
The characteristic mottled pattern is created by a Japanese technique called tsuchime, which involves hammering copper.
Continuing with the interiors inspired by Japanese traditions, the ceilings are a design feature that has a pivotal role to play in this theatrical experience. Shining a spotlight on traditional crafts the ceiling forms a beautiful continuous design feature throughout the four-floors of the Roastery.
This incredible Roastery is a celebration of Japanese tradition through material selection and interior design to create a one-of-a-kind immersive coffee house experience in Tokyo.
Through its stunning natural beauty and the material's versatile unique 5-ply construction, SanFoot® Real Wood Veneer makes a stunning bespoke design feature throughout the Roastery's four-floors.
